DOT Asks Carmakers to Help Curb Distracted Driving

The U.S. Department of Transportation has proposed guidelines that advise automakers to disable certain in-vehicle electronic features. The DOT wants to crack down on any action that requires drivers to give the task more than a two-second single glance, or 20 seconds of total glance time, to control.

Snow Art: Much Cooler Than Crop Circles [Art]

Crop circles are so 1990s. Nowadays, my favorite mysterious, creative phenomenon is snow art. Did aliens make it? Does it indicate some old druid structure hidden beneath the snow? Or is it just down to some insanely creative artist? More »

Rumored iPad 3 glass and digitizer images reveal no major changes from iPad 2

We’ve seen a number of supposed iPad 3 parts recently, and this latest one shows the front glass and digitizer assembly with the layout remaining largely the same as that of the iPad 2, with no changes to the Home button, front-facing camera position or ambient light sensor arrangement. If the pictures, which come by way of Sina Weibo, are accurate, the only recognizable change is the ribbon cable on the side of the glass, which extends roughly half-way up the device as opposed to the iPad 2 which has a shorter cable with a sideways orientation.

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G moves from ‘later this year’ to ‘in late March,’ gets $149 price tag

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G

When the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G was announced at CES last month, it was done so without a hard release date. Not surprising — that's how it's done. We still don't have a firm date, but Samsung and T-Mobile tonight in a new release have dropped "late March" on us. We've also got on-contract pricing to go along with it — $149.99 after $50 mail-in rebate.

The Galaxy S Blaze 4G, in addition to being a mouthful, is one of T-Mobile's newer 42Mbps devices. That is, it can pull down data really fast. Other specs include:

  • 3.97-inch Super AMOLED display
  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread
  • Dual-core qualcomm Snapdragon S3 processor at 1.5 GHz
  • 5MP rear camera
  • 1.3MP front-facing camera

Stay tuned for our next installment, when we might actually get a release date.

Pulse Surface Controller System: bangs the drum, desk, window

The Pulse Surface Controller is a vibration-based musical instrument that finally puts those years of air drumming to use. It’s a small, piezo-based MIDI controller that lets you turn pretty much any surface into a musical instrument. The device has a built-in suction cup, comes with velcro straps and plugs into your computer’s microphone port. The fun really starts with the dedicated controller software, that converts your percussive punches to your virtual instrument of choice. You’re not limited to drums either, as you can map your taps to a velocity sensitive melodic generator to create musical tones and scales. Luckily you won’t have to sit on your hands to get one of these either, as the Pulse Surface Controller System is available now for $59, or you can tap-tap-tap the video after the break for a demo.

Twitter’s Android and iOS app get updates; out on Kindle Fire now, Nook soon

The official Twitter app has just received an update on iOS and Android, bringing new features to both platforms, plus an “optimized” Ice Cream Sandwich experience as seen above. The app is also currently available on Amazon’s Appstore for the Kindle Fire now, and the company says it will pop up in the Barnes & Noble Nook Store February 23rd. For both Android and IOS the app has brought back / added a swipe gesture to reply to, reweet or favorite something without leaving your timeline, plus a notification on the Find Friends feature that it will be uploading their address book to Twitter’s server — a welcome change after the Path fiasco. The iOS-specific changes are the return of copy and paste, more options to share or save links in tweets, a mark all read for DMs and configurable font sizes. While it is optimized for ICS, on our CyanogenMod 9 tablet, the layout still looked reminiscent of the Gingerbread version instead of the iPad’s richer layout. Hit the source links below to give it a look yourself and let us know if it’s beating out your favorite mobile app yet.

Nokia teases with imaging-themed video ahead of MWC

Well what do we have here? Nokia just posted a delightful little video on its YouTube channel hinting at some kind of announcement during Mobile World Congress next week. The imaging-themed video entitled “Get ready to capture a pure view” shows beautiful snowy landscapes and uses words like detail, depth and definition. While we’ve enjoyed Nokia’s recent foray into all things white, the company’s current imaging flagship is getting a bit long in the tooth. Could this be about an N8 successor running Symbian Belle? Guess we’ll have to wait until Monday to find out.
