It’s not really a secret the Microsoft had planned on bringing bits of Windows Phone 7′s Metro UI to Windows 8, but we haven’t seen a lot of really telling evidence. However, with the Windows 8 milestone 3 build now available to Microsoft Connect partners, it was really just a matter of time before we started to get a peek.

Thanks to Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, we’ve now had a glimpse at what the Windows 8 welcome screen will look like. As you can see, the typography is very Metro indeed. Within Windows also mentions that the background image is customizable, and we’re wondering if it might not pull from your current Windows 8 theme. This particular shot shows the CTRL + ALT + DELETE login option, but we imagine you’ll still be able to log in by clicking your account picture tile as well.

Rivera and Thurrott also mention that the tablet version of the welcome screen will allow you to log in by swiping a pattern on the screen — as you can on current Android devices.

Official apps from NHL teams are being released on a staggered schedule. Last month, four more teams received apps, however, many fans were still left in the cold. The Winnipeg Jets have recently released their official app, which has to make fans up north incredibly happy. The franchise that was gone in Atlanta for so long has now returned, and the passionate fans up there can follow their team on-the-go with the The Winnipeg Jets App.

The features of the app include:

Jets interactive schedule and results

Up to date scores, stats and standings

News and Videos

Player cards, bios and stats

Game photos

The playoff races are heating up in the NHL, so the timing is good for the fans up in Winnipeg. Please find links to the free app after the break.

Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft’s slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what’s new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft’s official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn’t resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that’s something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April — we’ll let you know when the links are ready.

A few workarounds have been posted, but unfortunately they didn’t work unless your carrier had completed testing and was ready to schedule the update.

Now, however, the Chevron WP7 team’s Chris Walshie has delivered a handy little utility that will allow you to update any Windows Phone 7 device — regardless of your carrier.

Download and install the Windows Phone Support Tool (x86 or x64) and the ChevronWP7 Updater (x86 or x64)

Launch ChevronWP7 Updater and select your language. If your language isn’t listed, stop and do not update.

If were running WP7 build 7004 (you can verify in Zune) then run the updater twice.

Once the process completes, you should be able to copy and paste to your heart’s content. Let’s just hope all this update foolishness gets sorted out before we’re supposed to receive Mango.

Over on the Internet Explorer Blog, Microsoft has posted results from an extensive comparison of the top five Web browsers. The goal: to determine whether Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 10, Safari 5, or Opera 11 is able to squeeze the most life out of your laptop’s battery.

A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top — though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn’t necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11′s case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.

But what we’d really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test…

Patent applications are full of hope and broken dreams, as it’s far too easy to let a rampant imagination read beyond the layers of patent-attorney penned boilerplate. In the realm of the realistic, this application from Microsoft concerns a head-mounted display with a narrow-beam laser packing two dilation optics (us neither). If you then variate the diffraction grating between the two eyepieces, you create a three-dimensional virtual reality display. As much as we’d like to prowl the digital touchlines in Fifa Soccer with the Xbox equivalent of the Virtual Boy, it’s more likely that we’ll be stuck prowling our couches for years to come.

Qbo the cute open-source robot would, because he needs a constant stream of new abilities to maintain his youthful self-image. The sensor’s laser emissions create a “3D point cloud” that is added to data from Qbo’s existing odometer and gyroscope to create maps, model objects in 3D and plan movements. Why the Xtion instead of the cheaper Kinect? The robot’s builders, The Corpora, simply say they picked it for its “small size and weight” as well as its ability to adapt easily — which was precisely Asus’s developer-friendly intention in the first place. See the world as Qbo sees it, right after the break.

We already knew about most of the latest Apple TV‘s technical upgrades, but a few key specs have eluded us since its announcement. That’s now changed, however, thanks to user aicjofs over at XBMC’s forum, who ripped a fresh unit apart to find out exactly what’s inside of its shell. Apart from its documented single-core A5 SoC, it’s now confirmed that the 1080p-capable streamer features 512MB of Hynix-branded RAM (up from 256) along with an unchanged 8GB of storage, courtesy of Toshiba. Interestingly, there’s no word on whether it’s still packing Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR like the 2010 variant (Apple’s website only lists 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi), but MacRumors notes that aicjofs has discovered what’s possibly an additional WiFi antenna. A few parts are still under investigation, but you can check out the links below for more info.

Auslogics Disk Defrag has been part of my system maintenance toolkit for quite some time. With the release of version 3.2, it’s now even better at tidying up and optimizing your system’s hard disk drives. In addition to a cleaner, easier-to-use interface, Disk Defrag 3.2 offers improved single file and folder defragging, better processing of multiple disks, a simplified scheduling screen, and more informative tool tips. Auslogics has also fine-tuned the program’s defragmentation and file consolidation algorithms.

For laptop users, there’s a new option to lock the program if your system is running on battery power — so scheduled operations don’t kick in and drain your power source at an inopportune moment. If you happen to have an SSD installed in your PC, you can head to the Disk Defrag options and exclude it from scanning (many think that defragmenting an SSD is a very bad idea).

Auslogics Disk Defrag is a free download and works with most versions of Windows.
